Artist Statement - Kim Hamrock
I believe that everyone has an artist within. It’s just a matter of letting go and freely creating. Although I’ve drawn pictures and cartoons most of my life I didn’t start painting until 2005, and once I did, I couldn’t stop. I’m an intentionally untrained artist so that I have no blocks or rules that may limit my creativity. I like to paint with reckless abandon. Being an artist has taught me to observe life with a fresh perspective. Yet, on the other hand, I also enjoy specific themed art shows because they help give me some direction on a particular subject and style to paint.
I’m constantly experimenting with different mediums and a variety of tools. I’ve yet to develop any one particular style, since I can’t make up my mind which I like best. Is it abstract, plein air, still life or portrait? Do I use acrylics, oils, watercolors or ink? Honestly, if you looked at a wall full of my paintings you wouldn’t even think they were from the same artist.
No doubt, from being an extensive traveler, and surfing beautiful beaches around the world, there’s plenty of inspiration with no shortage of material. I’ve spent most of my life searching for the perfect beach with secluded waves. Now, I simply create it by combining two or three different beaches into one painting. I’ve always wanted to name my own surf spot. With my paintings, I get to do it repeatedly.
With creativity there are no limits. My main intention in all my artwork is that they’re created with passion and an energy that makes them unique.
“When looking at a fresh canvas or blank sheet of paper I believe there is no such thing as failure, only self-expression. These are the thoughts that free me up to create.” - DW
